فيلم "يوم أبطل أرسم" يفوز بالجائزة الأولى فى مهرجان ساقية الصاوي للأفلام التسجيلية

انطلاق ورشة "راوي" التاسعة لكتّاب السيناريو بمشاركة ستة مشاريع في الشوبك - الأردن

بتنظيم من الهيئة الملكية الأردنية للأفلام و بالتشاور مع معهد سندانس وبشراكة مع الشركة الأردنية لإحياء التراث هذا العام، يعمل صانعوا أفلام من الأردن و فلسطين و لبنان ومصر على تطوير نصوصهم السينمائية، في الموقع الجديد للورشة في فندق مونتريال في الشوبك.

عمان، 3 تشرين الثاني – أعلنت الهيئة الملكية الأردنية للأفلام ومعهد سندانس، يوم الجمعة الأول من تشرين الثاني، أسماء كتّاب السيناريو المشاركين في النسخة التاسعة لورشة كتّاب السيناريو "راوي"، والتي تجري في الفترة ما بين الأول وحتى الخامس من تشرين الثاني 2013.

تقوم الهيئة الملكية الأردنية للأفلام وبالتشاور مع برنامج الأفلام الطويلة لمعهد سندانس بإدارة هذه الورشة، التي تم تأسيسها عام 2005 حيث تُقدم الفرصة لصانعي الأفلام العرب في المنطقة لتطويرعملهم بإرشاد من مستشارين مبدعين ذوي خبرة، ومن ضمنهم هذه السنة: جيرمي بيكسر (بولورث) ونجوى النجار (المر و الرمان) ومو اغرودنيك (عمق المسحوق) وأصيل منصور (على مد البصر) وروزماري تروشيه (أمان الأشياء) وجيروم بوافان (دق الجرس).

وقال جورج داود، مديرعام الهيئة الملكية الأردنية للأفلام: "للسنة التاسعة على التوالي، يواصل راوي اكتشاف المواهب والروايات الاستثنائية في المنطقة. ويأتي ذلك ضمن أهداف الهيئة الملكية الأردنية للأفلام لدعم جيل جديد من صنّاع الأفلام والمحترفين العرب الذين سيمثلون بدورهم ثقافتنا وقيمنا النبيلة، بالإضافة الى انجازاتنا ونضالنا وامالنا وأحلامنا من خلال أفلامهم".

باتخاذ الصحراء الأردنية موقعاً كما جرت العادة، انتقل المشروع الى مكان جديد هذه السنة، وهو فندق مونتريال في الشوبك حيث يقع مقابل قلعة الشوبك الخلابة وتحت ادارة الشركة الأردنية لإحياء التراث. فمن شأن هذه البيئة الصحراوية أن تشجع على سرد القصص على أعلى المستويات.

يعد راوي واحداً من أقدم الدورات التدريبية المتقدمة التابعة للهيئة الملكية الأردنية للأفلام في مجال كتابة النصوص. يشمل خريجو راوي السابقين: شيرين دعيبس (أمريكا) ومحمد الدرادجي ( ابن بابل) وسالي الحسيني (أخي الشيطان) وهيفاء المنصور (وجدة).

قالت ديمة عازر، مديرة مشروع راوي: "رواي هو المنصة التي سيعمل من خلالها ستة كُتاب أفلام عرب على تطوير مشاريعهم الروائية الطويلة القادمة، ونحن نأمل بأن تتحول مشاريعهم إلى أفلام ذات شهرة عالمية".

أسماء المشاريع والمشتركين في راوي هذا العام هي: "أنا ومردوخ" ليحيى العبدالله من الأردن و"200 متر" لأمين نايفة من فلسطين و"ترامونتان" لفاتشي بولغورجيان من لبنان و"أولاد الأحد" لرامي قديح ونورا سليم من لبنان و"عبور" لوسام شرف وهلا دباجي من لبنان و "القاهرة، قبل قليل" لعلاء مصباح من مصر.

"أنا و مردوخ" (يحيى العبدالله) – الأردن

بعد تعرض الشاب الفلسطيني أحمد لحادث سير ووقوعه في غيبوبة، يستيقظ ليكتشف أنه فقد القدرة على التكلم باللغة العربية، وبأنه أصبح يتواصل باللغة العبرية.

وُلد يحيى العبدالله في ليبيا عام 1978، ونشأ في السعودية. يحمل شهادة الماجستير في السينما من جامعة ECAIRللسينما في باريس. لاقت أفلام يحيى نجاحا في المهرجانات السينمائية خصوصا عندما وصل فيلمه SMSالى مهرجان روتردام، بالإضافة الى عدة مهرجانات سينمائية اُخرى.فيلمه الروائي الطويل الأول، "الجمعة الأخيرة"، لاقى استقبالا جيداً في المهرجانات السينمائية المشهود لها دوليا.

"200 متر" (أمين نايفة) – فلسطين

مئتا متر تفصل مصطفى عن زوجته وأولاده كنتيجة لبناء جدار الفصل و القوانين العنصرية الاسرائيلية. يتلقى مصطفى اتصالا هاتفياً من زوجته التي تعيش على الجانب الآخر من الجدار، أن ابنهم الأصغر تعرض لحادث سيارة. بعد رفض تصريحه للدخول، يجد نفسه مع ثلاثة رجال آخرين في رحلة صعبة لاختراق الجدار.

ولد أمين نايفة في فلسطين عام 1988،أمضى طفولته بين الأردن و فلسطين الى أن استقرت عائلته في فلسطين مع اندلاع انتفاضة الأقصى التي لعبت دوراً كبيراً في تكوين شخصيته. بالرغم من ميوله و شغفه للسينما انتهى به المطاف أولاً في مهنة التمريض الى ان سنحت له الفرصة ليلتحق بمعهد البحر الأحمر للدراسات السينمائية في الأردن ليتابع حلمه وطموحه كصانع أفلام.

"ترامونتان- ربيع" (فاتشي بولغورجيان) – لبنان

تهتز حياة رجل ضرير بعد اكتشافه بأن هويته التي كان يحملها طوال حياته مزورة. يجول لبنان باحثا عن حقيقته وعن حقيقة جذوره.

فاتشي بولغورجيان صانع أفلام لبناني. يحمل شهادة الماجستير بالفنون الجميلة من جامعة نيويورك ضمن البرنامج السينمائي للخريجين والذي كان فيه زميلا إداريا. حصلت أطروحة بولغورجيان عن فيلمه "الطابور الخامس" على منحة لإنتاجه من رابطة هوليود للصحافة الاجنبية. وفي عام 2010، عُرض فيلمه في مهرجان كان السينمائي كجزء من برنامج Cinefondation، حيث حصل على الجائزة الثالثة، كما عُرضت أفلامه في مهرجانات عالمية. يطور بولغورجيان فيلمه الروائي "ترامونتان" وبدعم من بينال البندقية ومعهد سندانس ومؤسسة الدوحة للأفلام ومشروع المخرجين المستقلين في نيويورك IFP.

"أولاد الأحد" (رامي قديح، نورا سليم) – لبنان

جريمة قتل واحدة تغير حياة ثلاثة غرباء، والذين يحاولون البقاء على قيد الحياة في بيروت خلال فترة ما بعد الحرب.

أكمل رامي قديح شهادة الماجستير من الأكاديمية اللبنانية للفنون الجميلة عام 2006. ألّف وأخرج فيلمين قصيرين "قصة شهرزاد" و"الطاحونة"، اللذين عُرضا في مهرجانات عديدة حول العالم. يخرج رامي حالياً أفلاما مؤسسية وبرامج وثائقية لقناة الجزيرة، ويتعاون رامي في عمله مع نورا سليم.

بدأت نورا سليم الكتابة وهي في الرابعة عشر من عمرها للنسخة المحلية من جريدة Los Angeles Times. درست نورا الأدب الانجليزي بالإضافة الى الكتابة الابداعية في جامعة ستانفورد، حيث أخذت أيضا دروسا في البرامج الوثائقية والأفلام السردية. تعمل نورا الان مع الفائز بالأوسكار مرتين المخرج بيل غوتينتاغ، وتتعاون مع رامي قديح ككاتبة وباحثة ومنتجة.

"عبور" (وسام شرف، هلا دبجي) – لبنان

قصة حب غير مألوفة تقع بين خادمة أثيوبية ولاجئ سوري يجدان العزاء في بعضهما البعض خلال صعوبات يواجهانها في بيروت.

وسام شرف مخرج سينمائي ومنتج أخبار، يعيش بين بيروت وباريس. وقد قام بتغطية أخبار في مناطق مختلفة من العالم للقناة الفرنسية arte .

أخرج ثلاثة أفلام قصيرة: "هزّ يا وزّ"و"جيش من النمل"و"البطل ما بي موت"ووثائقي عنوانه "كلّ هذا وبعد".

هلا دبجي فنّانة تشكيليّة تعيش وتعمل في بيروت، لبنان. وقد حصلت على شهادة في الفنون الجميلة سنة ٢٠٠٥.عُرِضت لوحاتها وصورها ورسوماتها ومنحوتاتها في لبنان وساحل العاج  وإيطاليا والولايات المتّحدة. وقد صمّمت خط من الألبسة تحت اسم "Les têtes d'Obu".

"القاهرة، قبل قليل" (علاء مصباح) – مصر

خلال أول مظاهرة مليونية من الثورة المصرية، يقرر خالد وباسم –الصديقان المراهقان- أن ينطلقا من مدينتهما الواقعة في دلتا النيل لينضما للاعتصام في ميدان التحرير، ولكل منهما سبب مختلف. خلال رحلتهما عليهما أن يتحديا ظروف عصيبة في طريقهما إلى العاصمة الثائرة في يوم فريد في تاريخ مصر.

علاء مصباح صانع أفلام ومؤلف. تخرج من الجامعة الامريكية في القاهرة عام 2010 بتخصص في الاتصالات والإعلام، وتخصص فرعي بالسينما. ألف كتبا عدة حازت على جوائز وطنية في مصر. منذ انتقاله للعيش في الدوحة عام 2011، شارك بالأنشطة السينمائية العربية من خلال انتاج وكتابة وإخراج العديد من الافلام القصيرة. يعمل علاء حاليا على تحرير فيلمه الروائي الوثائقي "اليوم الذي اتوقف فيه عن الرسم" بالإضافة الى عمله بالقسم السينمائي بالجامعة الامريكية بالقاهرة.

Sundance Institute Selects Six Projects for the 2013 Rawi Screenwriters Lab in Jordan

Screenwriting fellows for the ninth edition of the Rawi Screenwriters Lab, running November 1-5, were announced today by the Royal Film Commission-Jordan and Sundance Institute. The Lab was created to support emerging filmmakers around the world. Former Rawi Fellows include Cherien Dabis ("Amreeka"), Mohammed Al Daradji ("Son of Babylon"), Sally El Hosaini ("My Brother The Devil") and Haifaa Al Mansour ("Wadjda").

Haifaa Al Mansour

Launched in 2005, the Lab provides an opportunity for filmmakers from the region to develop their work under the guidance of accomplished creative advisors. 

2009 Rawi alumnus Haifaa Al Mansour (interviewhere) premiered her debut feature "Wadjda" --the first feature film shot entirely in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the first-ever by a Saudi female filmmaker--at last year’s Venice and Telluride film festivals. The film was released this past September by Sony Pictures Classics and recently became Saudi Arabia’s first ever candidate for the Foreign-Language Oscar.

About her experience at the Lab, Mansour stated, "The real momentum for Wadjda began with the Rawi Screenwriters Lab; I am tremendously grateful for the unwavering support of Michelle Satter and her entire team at Sundance Institute who not only helped the script find its true voice, but also in every aspect of getting the film made.”

Me, Myself & Murdoch by Yahya Al-Abdallah (Jordan)

After being hit by a car and falling into a coma, a young Palestinian man wakes up and finds he has lost his ability to speak Arabic and can only communicate in Hebrew.

Yahya Al-Abdallah was born in Libya in 1978 and raised in Saudi Arabia. He holds a Masters in Film from EICAR Cinema School in Paris. He found success on the festival circuit in 2008 when his short SMS went to Rotterdam and several other film festivals.

200 Meters by Ameen Nayfeh (Palestine)

After the Second Intifada, a married Palestinian couple find themselves separated by newly erected cement walls that divide the West Bank. When his son falls ill, the husband must find a way to get around the wall and be reunited with his family.

Ameen Nayfeh was born in Palestine in 1988 and spent his formative years moving between Jordan and Palestine. Despite an early interest in filmmaking, in 2010 he earned his B.S. in Nursing from A-Quds University in East Jerusalem. Two years later, he earned a Producing degree from the Red Sea Institute of Cinematic Arts in Jordan with the goal of being able to tell authentic stories from his region. He splits his time between Palestine, Jordan, Germany, and Bahrain.

Tramontane by Vatche Boulghourijian (Lebanon)

A young blind man’s quiet life is rocked when he inadvertently discovers that he has been living under a fake identity for his entire life. He journeys through rural Lebanon in search for the truth about where he comes from.

Vatche Boulghourjian is a Lebanese filmmaker. He holds an MFA from New York University’s Graduate Film Program, where he was a departmental fellow. Fifth Column, Boulghourjian’s thesis film at NYU, received a production grant from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and in 2010 premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, as part of the Cinéfondation program, where it was awarded Third Prize. His films have screened at festivals worldwide. Boulghourjian is currently developing his first feature Tramontane with the support of the Venice Biennale College Cinema, the Doha Film Institute, Sundance Institute and the IFP.

Sons of Sunday by Rami Kodeih & Nora Salim (Lebanon)

One murder irrevocably changes the lives of three practical strangers who are trying to survive the crime-riddled underbelly of post-war Beirut.

Rami Kodeih completed his master’s degree from Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts in 2006. He wrote and directed two short films (A Sheherazade Tale and The Mill), which have screened at several festivals around the world. Rami currently directs corporate films and ongoing documentaries for Al Jazeera and often collaborates with Nora Salim.

Nora Salim first started writing at age fourteen for the local edition of the Los Angeles Times. She went on to study English literature with an Emphasis in Creative Writing at Stanford University, where she also took classes in narrative film and documentary. She is currently working with two-time Oscar-winning director Bill Guttentag and often collaborates with Rami Kodeih as a writer/researcher/producer.

3D (Dirty, Difficult, Dangerous) by Wissam Charaf & Hala Dabaji (Lebanon)

An unlikely love story between an Ethiopian housemaid and Syrian refugee finding solace in each other through their respective struggles in Beirut.

Born in 1973, Wissam Charaf is a Lebanese/French director, news producer, cameraman and editor. In his news work, he has covered major conflicts ranging from Lebanon and the Near East to Darfur, Afghanistan, Haiti and North Korea. His short film An Army of Ants competed in the Locarno Film Festival and won the Jury Prize at the Lunel Film Festival in France.

Hala Dabaji was born in Lebanon in 1981. She earned both her B.A. and M.A. in Fine Arts at the Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts. She works as a multidisciplinary artist in Beirut.

Cairo, Earlier by Ala’a Mosbah (Egypt)

As the Egyptian revolution begins, two teenagers from a small village attempt to get to Cairo in order to be part of the action.

Ala’a Mosbah is an Egyptian filmmaker and author. In 2010 he graduated from the American University in Cairo with majors in Communications and Media Arts, with a minor in Film. He has written several books which have won national prizes in Egypt. Since moving to Doha in 2011, he has been actively involved with the Arabic film scene through producing, writing, and directing many short films. He is currently working on editing his feature documentary The Day I Stop Painting in addition to working in the Film Department at the American University in Cairo.

The ten successful film-makers start mentoring program

Ten young film makers progressed to the second stage of the ‘Women in the New Egypt’ film competition, organised by the British Embassy in Cairo, Misr International Films (Youssef Chahine) and the British Council. The film makers began the process of realizing their five-minute creative films to showcase issues facing women in Egypt after the 2011 revolution at a three-day workshop in Dahshur. The time was spent focusing on production skills and mentoring by famous Egyptian Director Mohamed Khan, teaching the film makers how to develop their ideas into film treatments.

Five individuals from the ten will be selected according to the quality of the film treatments they now produce. These five will be invited to create their five-minute films, helped along the way with further mentoring by movie industry experts. The five films will be screened as part of Misr International Films’ Panorama European Film Festival held in Cairo in October. The eventual winner will be awarded a week long fellowship at a prestigious film institute in London and the second and third runners-up will also receive prizes.

". Café Regular, Cairo" Short Film now online

Ritesh Batra's award winning Arabic language short Café Regular, Cairo has screened at over 40 international film festivals and won 12 awards including the FIPRESCI Critics Prize at the International Film Festival of Oberhausen and Special Mentions at Tribeca Intl Film Festival and Chicago International Film Festival. It was bought by Arte for French and German television. His debut feature 'Lunchbox' will premiere at the International Critics Week at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.

فيلم "طارق " يفوز بجوائز مهرجان الساقية ويوسف شاهين

الأورميد البصرى : اختيار فيلم "حرية" لـ علاء مصباح ضمن برنامج دوك ميد

أعلنت دوك ميد الممول من الأوروميد السمعي البصري عن أسماء المشتركين الذين تم إختيار مشاريعهم  لمتابعة الدورة الثالثة من البرنامج. و هو برنامج تدريبي قائم على المشاريع ويتناول الإنتاج الدولي المشترك للأفلام الوثائقية المستقلّة. يتوجّه دوك ميد إلى المنتجين والمخرجين المنتجين في البلدان العربية المتوسطية الذين يطوّرون مشاريع طموحة على المستوى الدولي وذلك من خلال ثلاث جلسات تمكنهم العمل بطريقة مثلى في مجالات إنتاج الأفلام الوثائقية والإبداع والتمويل والتكنولوجيا.

هذا العام 61 مشروعا تقدّم للمشاركة ولكن تم اختيار مجموعة تضمّ ١٠ مشاريع فقط كل من مصر, المغرب, ليبيا, تونس, الجزائر و سوريا.

• بيروت دي سي (لبنان)  توفّر الدعم والمساعدة للسينمائيين المستقّلين في العالم العربي من خلال التدريب والترويج والمشاركة في الانتاج منذ سنة ١٩٩٩.

• أورو دوك (فرنسا) تساهم منذ اكثر من ١٠ سنوات، في التدريب والتشبيك بين المنتجين والمموّلين الاوروبيين لتطوير مشاريع وثائقية وتحقيقها.

• دوك أتونيس (تونس) مهرجانًا للأفلام الوثائقية يقدم مجموعة واسعة من الأفلام الدولية التي تتناول قضايا هامة.

Ten documentary projects selected for DOCmed 2013

Documentary training programme to kick off at the end of March in Lebanon

DOCmed, a Euromed Audiovisual-funded training programme for documentary producers, has announced the names of participants for its third session.

The programme aims to help producers and director-producers from Arabic-speaking countries in the South Mediterranean region to work on their creative documentary projects towards their international co-production.

During three training sessions, DOCmed allows them to optimise their performance in documentary production, creation, financing, and using the latest technologies.

This year, ten projects from Egypt, Morocco, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria and Syria were chosen from 61 documentary projects submitted:

• Drifa and the lonely whales, directed by Drifa Mezenner and produced by Boualem Ziani (Algeria)
• Little Eagles, directed by Mohamed Rashad and produced by Hala Lotfy (Egypt)
• Une place sous le soleil (lit. “A place under the sun”), directed and produced by Karim Aitouna (Morocco)
• Baba and the Colonel, directed and produced by Khalid Shamis (Libya)
• Freedom (Horya), directed and produced by Alaa Mosbah (Egypt)
• The sky above Alexandria, directed and produced by Ahmed Rashwan (Egypt)
• I have a Picture, directed by Mohamed Zedan and produced by Mark Lotfy (Egypt)
• Rue Al Amine (lit. “El Amine Street”), directed and produced by Maya Mounayar (Syria)
• In Grey Depth, directed and produced by Mona Lotfy (Egypt)

The first session, to focus on the analysis of participants’ projects in terms of writing and development, is to take place from March 18 to 24 in Lebanon.

DOCmed is a programme initiated by:

• Beirut DC (Lebanon), a Lebanese cultural association that aims to provide help and support to independent Arab filmmakers, in facing and overcoming the constraints to independent-minded Arab cinema.
• Eurodoc (France), a training programme designed for European documentary film professionals who are developing a specific project.
• Doc à Tunis (Tunisia), a documentary film festival.

All is Permitted in Beirut, which won the 2010 Ministry of Culture National Novel Contest, has been released this year at the Cairo International Book Festival. Written by Alaa Mosbah, who graduated from the Leadership for Education and Development (LEAD) program in 2010, the book is about a recent AUC graduate’s reactions to the 2006 Hezbollah-Israel war. Drawing on Mosbah’s own experiences at AUC, where he took part in political demonstrations and student-led activities, the story also documents the active student movement at the University.

“In the fall of 2006,” Mosbah said, “I was involved in Nusrah, a coalition of 30 AUC student groups that was formed to support the Lebanese after the war. Together, we raised around LE 1.5 million that we donated to the relief effort in Lebanon.” 

A native of Mansoura, Mosbah was moved to write about AUC because of this experience. “I saw how active AUC students were and how much they cared about their brothers in Lebanon,” he said. “The student movement really affected me. I realized that students could be very active and play important roles, even better than governments. In my novel, I changednusrah (solidarity) to wihda (unity) so I wasn’t just copying reality, but creating a work of fiction based on my experiences.”

Highlighting why he chose to write about the 2006 Lebanon war in particular, Mosbah noted, “I was strongly moved by this war. It was the first direct Arab-Israeli war that my generation witnessed. It was ‘on air’ all the time on TV. I spent all day watching updates. As a journalism student, I wished I could be on the front lines covering everything myself and showing it to the whole world. I could not do that at the time, but I decided to write about it later.” 

In All is Permitted in Beirut, the main character, Shadi, is known for his activism against American foreign policy. He led anti-American political movements at AUC during the 2003 Iraq war. “In actual fact, AUC students were the first in Cairo to demonstrate against the war,” Mosbah explained. “In the novel, I used stories of my friends at AUC who took part during the protests to write some of the scenes. I also used AUC student newspaper articles from that time, which provided a rich source of information.”
 
After his graduation, Shadi accepts a job at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, in spite of his history of anti-American political sentiment. “At first, Shadi cares about his job, and he feels important that he is working at the embassy, even though some of his friends make him feel guilty,” Mosbah said. However, Shadi is soon forced to confront the tension between his political beliefs and his new job when a close friend is trapped and injured in Lebanon during the 2006 war. 

“Shadi thinks back to leading demonstrations on campus against the American invasion of Iraq when he is working at the embassy, but he is trying to forget that part of his life and conceal it from his supervisors,” Mosbah said. “Eventually, he is drawn back into activism, which gets him into trouble at work. He ends up sitting in the office all day blogging and sending out emails against the war and the U.S. government. At the end, his boss begins investigating him, so he quits his job.”
  
Shadi and Mosbah have more than just student activism in common. Mosbah also interned at the U.S. Embassy one summer. “This book is fiction, but the characters are based on my personal experiences, as well as those of my friends. Each character is a mixture of details about all of us,” said Mosbah.  
 
In addition to reflections on his time at the University, Mosbah also conducted research in Lebanon in the summer of 2009 to be able to write the book. “I collected stories from people who were trapped in Beirut,” he said. “I also took a taxi from Beirut to Damascus to retrace the steps of those who fled. During the journey, the driver told me stories about driving people to Syria during the war.”

Mosbah began writing when he was 8 years old, winning a national writing competition at the ages of 11 and 13.  However, his parents were not keen for him to pursue a career in the arts. “The LEAD program changed my life,” Mosbah reflected. “My parents wanted me to be a doctor or an engineer, and I was supposed to join the Faculty of Medicine at Mansoura University. I applied for the LEAD program because I thought if I could go to AUC, I would be able to pursue my artistic interests.”
 
Upon his acceptance at AUC, Mosbah enrolled in engineering because of familial pressure. After one year, he transferred to journalism and mass communication, ultimately majoring in communication and media arts and minoring in film. “I decided it was time for me to do what I wanted to do, and now my parents are proud of what I have accomplished,” he affirmed. 

Mosbah was an active student at the University. He was a member of the Model United Nations, Model Arab League, the Student Union and the Help Club. In addition, he wrote for several student publications, including Caravan, Dimensions and AUC Times. “Extracurricular activities supplemented and expanded what I learned in the classroom,” Mosbah said. “I mainly learned from my friends and colleagues, who are now shaping the country’s future. I also published my first articles in Dimensions, before I went on to publish in Egyptian newspapers. I had a biweekly column, which is where some sections of my first book, This is America, were first published.” 

An avid writer, Mosbah published his first book, This is America: Diaries of an Egyptian Student, a memoir of his time as a study-abroad student in New York, during his junior year at AUC. In the summer of 2011, his second book, a travel diary titled, From Beirut to Wadi Rum, was published. At AUC, he won the Madalyn Lamont Literary Award in 2007 for a short story he had written.

Mosbah is also a filmmaker and spent the last year in Qatar participating in a short film program at the Doha Film Institute and working as a producer and co-curator for Harrer Harrer, an exhibition at the Doha Tribeca Film Festival of 50 one-minute films from across the Arab world about the Arab Spring. His short films Tariq and Last Seven Minutes have been screened at the Doha Tribeca Film Festival, and the latter was also shown at Cannes International Film Festival. His short documentary film about the Egyptian Revolution, Best Day of My Life, won the Best Documentary Award at the Cairo Cinemobile Film Festival 2012.

قريبا : رواية "كل شىء مباح فى بيروت" لـ علاء مصباح

تصدر عن دار نهضة مصر للنشر رواية "كل شىء مباح فى بيروت" للكاتب علاء مصباح خلال معرض القاهرة الدولى للكتاب 2013، وكانت الرواية قد فازت بجائزة المسابقة الأدبية المركزية للهيئة العامة لقصور الثقافة 2010.

تتناول الرواية حرب لبنان تموز 2006 من خلال شخصياتها المختلفة، وتقع الأحداث بين القاهرة والإسكندرية وبيروت، ما بين الشاب شادى الحسينى الذى اشتهر بمعارضته للحكومة الأمريكية وقاد مظاهرات الطلبة ضد حرب العراق خلال فترة دراسته بالجامعة الأمريكية، لكنه يلتحق بالعمل بالسفارة الأمريكية بالقاهرة فور تخرجه، وصديقه عماد الذى تنقلب رحلته الترفيهية إلى بيروت إلى حرب شعواء تشتعل بين ليلة وضحاها، وفتاته ندى التى تواجه صراعا ذاتيا مع نفسها ومع أسرتها بعد تعرضها للتحرش فى الشارع، ويؤرخ الفيلم أيضا للحركة الطلابية لشباب الجامعة الأمريكية خلال حرب لبنان.

يقول الكاتب علاء مصباح، إن الرواية بها الكثير من الأحداث الواقعية التى عاصرها بنفسه خلال دراسته بالجامعة الأمريكية، فهو يكتب عن شخصيات حية ومظاهرات سياسية وأنشطة طلابية شارك فيها بنفسه مع أصدقائه، كما أنه قام برحلة إلى بيروت خصيصا ليستطيع الكتابة عن المدينة، وقرأ الكثير عن حكايات الذين فاجأتهم الحرب خلال أجازتهم فى لبنان حتى يستطيع أن يقدم واقعا يقنع القارئ ويقدم الأحداث التاريخية بدقة.

ويضيف مصباح أن حرب تموز 2006 هى أول حرب مباشرة بين العرب وإسرائيل يراها جيله من الشباب، من مواليد الثمانينات، وكانت لهذه الحرب خصوصيتها إذ تابعها العالم كله على شاشات التليفزيون فى بث مباشر، وصار مراسلو الفضائيات الإخبارية نجوما يتابعهم المشاهد العربى ويثيرون إعجابه بجرأتهم ووقوفهم على خطوط النار فى بيروت وجنوب لبنان وداخل إسرائيل، حيث طالت صواريخ حزب الله حيفا وتل أبيب لأول مرة.

يذكر أن مصباح قد أصدر كتابين من قبل هما "هذه هى أمريكا، يوميات طالب مصرى فى بلاد العم سام" عام 2009، وكتاب "من بيروت إلى وادى رم، حكايات 21 يوما فى بلاد الشام"، والكتابان من أدب الرحلات.

علاء مصباح تخرج فى الجامعة الأمريكية عام 2010، ويعمل فى مجال إخراج وإنتاج الأفلام التسجيلية والروائية القصيرة، وسبق أن فاز بجائزة مهرجان القراءة للجميع عامى 1999 و2001 وجائزة أوسكار رجل المستحيل 2005 وجائزة التفوق الثقافى وجائزة مادليت لامونت للقصة القصيرة من الجامعة الأمريكية 2007.
